Did any members of the group the Military Wives ever think they would become famous? They had the UK Christmas number one single, appeared on television and radio, and are now about to release their first album, which is also headed for the top slot in the album charts.

Theirs is an incredible and inspiring story. Each member of the group is a wife to a serving military personnel, most of whom were serving in Afghanistan. They were brought together for a BBC television program by the choir master Gareth Malone. Little did he suspect what was to follow or what impact they would have on the public. His ethos when forming the choir was not to question anyone's right to sing. Whatever their experience or ability, all were welcomed and invited to join.

This is a great example of how you too can become a singer even if you are currently a secretary, shop assistant or housewife. The opportunities are out there if you just take sometime to look for them. Depending on your ability you could consider joining a local church or gospel choir. There are many amateur musical societies and groups looking for new members. All of these will give you the opportunity to express yourself musically, whatever your level of talent. You never know who could be at the next church service or performance ready to discover you.

If it turns out you have the voice like that of Katherine Jenkins or Lilly Allen, then of course the television talent show could have the path to follow. You do not have to start big like on the X Factor or BGT, there are many local talent shows for solo artists and groups. Try these first to get used to performing in front of an audience. You could even try karaoke in your local pub as you find your feet.

Once you have the confidence and if you believe you have what it takes to become a singer, then it is time to put yourself out there. Check the websites of the various talent shows, Britain's Got Talent, X Factor and now the Voice, are just among the many talent shows that you can try.
