To become a famous child singer, you can forget about American Idol. They do not go for kiddies. It is assumed the Kid Singer is younger than ten. The easiest way to break into this industry is to be part of a famous group of singers. Donny Osmond had older siblings who could really sing and he rode their coattails to fame along with his sister Marie, but before that it was The Osmonds who were on TV. This also worked for Michael Jackson when he was with his brothers The Jackson Five. Of course it helped that they both had a wonderful talent, but talent alone would not a famous kid make.
You need a good agent, and for the child singer, that is most likely going to be the father. For every Beyonce or Michael, there is a Joe Jackson or Matthew Knowles. These agent / dads work very well in the beginning of their careers, however rarely work out once the child achieves fame. Divas and Dads do not mix very well.
The other avenue is to grow up in a strong church. Many a child star started out singing in their church choir or gospel group. Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Al Green and little Stevie Wonder all started out this way. As you can see they were also all blacks. Gospel and Choir are strong institutions in the black community, stemming from the times of slavery where blacks communicated their pain and sorrow through song. Even rap achieves this same cathartic activity today.
As talked about in prior articles, America's Got Talent has probably the best track record of the major talent shows on television today for promoting the kid singer. This show is definitely more of a campy, throwback show to the old shows of the fifties and sixties. Everybody loves the little crooner belting out show tunes like the sun'll come up tomorrow. The cute little chubby cheeked singer singing momma's got a brand new bag, makes us smile and wish for James Brown's ghost to come and sweep the little urchin up and hug him. We seem to find kids doing grownup things amusing. Have you ever seen an episode of Toddler and Tiaras? OK that is a sick analogy, but you get the idea.
Finally you can try relocating from one art form to another. If you've hit the jackpot and got some acting or modeling gigs, you can get your agent to try for some singing spots. Try not to reach too far; look for a commercial where the kid has to sing the jingle. Maybe have in the next part of a movie a spot where you have to sing to their Dad or to their dog. There are always soundtracks in movies; get the director to allow the kid to sing while one is playing in the background.
Well here are just a few pearls of wisdom in order to become a famous kid singer. Hopefully they will help propel your child to stardom, and allow you to pay off some of your gambling debts, or buy that dream home you've wanted.
